The very British weather failed to dampen spirits among the artists invited to Millennium Bridge to give their ‘take’ on the Diamond Jubilee Pageant – and Society of Women Artists members had a right royal time, painting the flotilla as it passed beneath them.

The society’s president Sue Jelley along with Caroline de Peyrecave and Kim Roskell were among those invited by the BBC outside.  As a sparkling curtain-raiser to her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Her Majesty The Queen attended a special Celebration Of The Arts on 23 May 2012, at The Royal Academy of Arts in London.

To mark the evening, Her Majesty The Queen presented five special Diamond Jubilee Awards to the young artists of the future, to assist them to take up their studies in the creative arts and design – awards funded by arts benefactors, to which The Queen herself has made a contribution. She presented the awards assisted by leading exponents in each field, from David Hockney to Sir Derek Jacobi. The Visual Arts Award (citation by David Hockney) was received by Prem Sahib. Guests included a spectacular and eclectic gathering of artists, actors, sculptors, directors, designers, composers, musicians and singers in all spheres of music; some of the leading heads of our arts companies and institutions, and some who, more quietly, make a lasting contribution. The party included over 30 Dames of the British Empire from the arts.
